1916 WESTERN SMELTING AND POWER COMPANY - Incorporated (in 1911) Under the Laws of the State of Washington - This was a Cooke City, Park County, Montana operation. The company built a hydroelectric powerplant  near a 53 foot waterfall on the Clark's Fork River (knowns as the "Big Fall"). An extensive, 1/4 mile wooden flume carried water to the plant. The construction required so much wood that they needed their own saw mill, which manufactured over 800,000 feet of timber. The company also built a smelter for processing copper ores from the area but was never fully operational. Hand-signed by Dr. Gottwerth Lebrecht Tanzer as president (and general manager) who was from Seattle, Washington. J. J. Black, secretary. Had offices at Seattle, WA and Cooke City, MT. This stock certificate represents so much history, I cannot include it all here. I encourage you to type the company name into GOOGLE BOOKS. I found some excellent photos there.   SOLD
